Save the Runway: DKNY does Fashion's Night Out September 10, 2009 at 2:07 pm I have no idea how anyone in NYC right now can decide where to make their stops for Fashion’s Night Out. One of the stops I would have liked to take was DKNY. First off, there will be DKNY Limited Edition Fall 2009 'Save the Runway' Tote Bags in honor of Fashion’s Night Out and DKNY’s 20 year anniversary. These are limited edition and one-of-a-kind, 20 will be sold at the Madison Avenue store and 20 will be sold at the SoHo location. Materials on these bags will come entirely from DKNY’s Fall 2009 runway. Bag will be sold for $35 and proceeds benefit the National September 11th Memorial & Museum. We will continue to bring you our favorites, though we know we will miss hundreds of other events! Our favorite shoe designer, who continues to wow us with its handbag collection, Christian Louboutin, will be hosting two events in New York for Fashion’s Night Out. Louboutin is offering a Champagne Foot Bath at their store on Madison Avenue. At their boutique on Horatio Street, you can dance the night away to in their disco themed Loub Lounge. Donna Karan Crinkled Leather Satchel September 10, 2009 at 1:00 pm The Donna Karan Crinkled Leather Satchel has been sitting in the New Arrivals section of Saks.com for a while now, and I’ve been trying to figure out what to say about it, if anything. I’ve been critical of Karan’s bags in the past – many of them seem to be overpriced and under designed. This one seems to have both a reasonable design standpoint and price, but I’m still unconvinced – even a stopped clock is right twice a day. The asymmetrical placement of the pockets and zippers reminds me in no small amount of the Alexander McQueen Faithful Tote that we took note of back in July. The concept seems to be almost exactly the same in the two bags – a tough, black leather tote made out of a seemingly-random-but-not mishmash of hardware and pockets. So when two bags have such similar goals, I guess the only thing left to do is decide which one is more successful. I appreciate that Karan used matte instead of glossy leather on this bag. It goes with the industrial/biker feel much better than the glossy alternative, and just tends to look softer and richer in general. So, plus one for her. I don’t like how the handles are set, though, and that may be the chief thing that’s holding me back from really embracing this bag. They seem too wide and thick for their height, and they ruin the proportion of the bag. If it hadn’t been for them, Karan might have finally shown signs of getting the gist of this whole handbag thing. Buy through Saks for $1295. Various brands from the surrounding Bleeker Street area will be participating in our Fashion's Night Out Fashion Show to showcase the hottest looks for Fall. Teen Vogue Fashion Show participants include: Cynthia Rowley, Intermix, Brunello Cucinelli,Tommy Hilfiger, Steve Madden, Brooks Brothers Black Fleece, Coach, Mulberry and Marc by Marc Jacobs. After the fashion show, Taylor Momsen's band "The Pretty Reckless" will give an exclusive concert. Both events are open to the public.
