Probably the greatest achievement in the development of purses was the reticule, used in the 18th century. These were miniature purses that had no handles and were carried around in the hand. The reticules further developed into today’s chic purses, more popularly known as ‘clutch’ purses .

With several top companies producing purses in a dazzling array of designs and styles, the purse industry has become a multi-million dollar business. Today, purses vary not only based on their design, but also on the material used in their manufacture. From myriad colors and embroidery to sequins and diamonds, purses have come a long way and have added a substantial style quotient to our lives.

Greetings and salutations, my loyal readers! Let me tell you a little story. I was out shopping with some friends last week (surprise, surprise) and I had the strangest altercation. My friends and I were at Sak's 5th Ave. to check out the latest designer handbags, and we are all raving over this incredible new purse from Coach. If you have read any of my previous work, you would know that I am Coach's biggest fan!

It was a beautiful purse! It had incredible vintage styling, and was constructed from the finest, most supple caramel-colored leather. I was literally drooling over this purse, as were my fellow shoppers. As I was inspecting the bag and admiring the awesome multi-colored liner, I could sense that somebody was peering over my shoulder. I turned around to discover another woman lusting after the very handbag I had in my hands.

At this point, I was both annoyed and afraid. I was annoyed by having a stranger invade my personal space, and scared by the crazed and maniacal look in her eyes. This woman looked like a junkie waiting for her next fix! In the past, I have written about my struggle with being a designer handbag junkie. It was, however, all in good humor and I did employ a certain amount of creative embellishment.

This woman, on the other hand, looked like she was about to attack me! I couldn't believe it. Fortunately, I had some friends with me. Otherwise, I suspect we may have had a catfight on our hands. Needless to say, I made a hasty escape with my new coach handbag. Later that evening, I sat down at my computer to write some new copy for the site and I had a really hard time forgetting about this woman. It got me thinking about the bigger picture, with regards to high end consumer items like designer fashion accessories.

Why are people so strangely obsessed with trivial items? Why do we place such value on inanimate objects? I am generally not one to consider designer handbags and fashion accessories trivial, because I am absolutely in love with them. But in the bigger picture that is reality, these are not important matters. Handbags are simply something I am interested in, and write about for my website. Sure, I have more bags than I could ever possibly put to use. But I am far from being fanatical about them! Well…most of the time.

Culturally speaking in the United States, women are supposed to love the idea of carrying around some sort of handbag for the majority of their life. Not all women love the idea of a handbag. Yves Saint Laurent Flap Shoulder Bag

I’ve had a bit of a crush on Yves Saint Laurent since their pre-fall bags started rolling out, and it doesn’t look to be ending any time soon. I normally prefer things with a bit more of an edgy look, so this might be a sign of maturation on my part. Or maybe the bags are just that good – maybe they’re so well-designed that it’s impossible not to find some kind of attractiveness in them, no matter what your personal taste.

I’m not sure which one it is, but I’m absolutely sure that I love the Yves Saint Laurent Flap Shoulder Bag. There’s a beauty in its simplicity that I find irresistible.

And really, how could you not love it, or at least appreciate the restrained hand that created it? The leather that YSL chose is sumptuous, textured and with slight color variations, but none of those things is present in quantities that would make the bag look over-processed or unedited. The folds that create the flap are elaborate and luxurious, but when you look at the closed bag, they all fall perfectly in to line.

The hardware on the bag might be my favorite aspect. The hook handle attachments are something that YSL has shown on several other bags this season, and I can’t get over how much I like them. They’re sculptural and elegant while still being thick and tough; it’s an effect that matches exactly with the soft but weathered leather that makes up the bag, and the details are subtle enough to not overwhelm the deceptively simple construction.

I know some people will say that this bag is boring, but I would strenuously disagree. Everything that’s done with this bag is done with the utmost care and attention to detail, and I’d rather that a designer focus on getting a few key things exactly right than bog down a bag with poorly conceived design elements just for the sake of visual interest. Gucci Galaxy Slouchy Metallic Leather Hobo

And now I can say that I am finding myself staring at a funky and fun Gucci Bag. I know, right? Been a long time since Gucci really wowed us. There have been a few contenders, a few bags that attempted to win their way back into our hearts, and this handbag is another.

Nothing about the Gucci Galaxy Slouchy Metallic Leather Hobo reinvents the wheel, but the shape is wearable and the lustrous blue metallic leather brings an edgy touch.

I’m digging the slouchy and comfortable shape of the bag, which has an ample shoulder drop of 19″. The single chain link shoulder strap adds the perfect spunk to the already attention-getting blue metallic leather. I love a great big slouchy bag that I can throw over my shoulder and run out the door with. As much as I love to dress up and look all fancy, I am admittedly more of a casual chic kind of gal. Prada Craquele Tote

We’ve had some harsh words to say over the past month or so about Prada’s fall handbag collection. Some of them are covered in fur, some of them are unfortunate combinations of velvet and nylon, and a lot of them look a little “grandma.”

As a result, I’m not sure if I’m being more charitable to the Prada Craquele Tote than I would be otherwise. It’s easy to argue that it’s a pretty decent bag when compared to the line’s other fall offerings, though.

To me, Prada bags always seem to be at one end of the spectrum – either they bore me to tears are they’re so far off in WTFland that I can’t conceive of how I would incorporate them in to my everyday life. This bag is somewhere in the middle, though, and I think that’s why I kind of like it. It’s not completely plain, but it’s also not completely over-the-top.

The gold studs on the contrast leather that runs along the seams and handles are a well-edited response to the studded trend, and the textured leather is interesting without looking too processed. It’s not knocking my socks off, but it’s easily my favorite bag of theirs that I’ve seen in a few months. Buy through Saks for $2595.

Maison Martin Margiela Ruched Leather Clutch

I’m betting that most of you have heard “Run This Town,” Jay-Z’s latest single. I live in the outer reaches or the rap-saturated Atlanta radio market, and the song is almost inescapable when listening to about half of the radio presets in my car. As with most slickly produced, high-budget hip-hop, it’s also incredibly catchy and infectious.

It took a few listens before I got all the words, and when I did, I realized that Hova dropped a really odd name in one of the lyrics – Maison Martin Margiela. I don’t know how many of the average pop-rap fans will even understand who that is, or realize that it’s anyone at all, but I found it oddly impressive. MMG is hardly a household name and is not even particularly famous to those that are casually fashion-conscious, so the fact that someone conventionally famous is not only aware that his line exists but also familiar enough with it to include it in braggadocious song lyrics has had me thinking about it for a couple days. And as such, let’s talk about the Maison Martin Margiela Ruched Leather Clutch.

If you’re at all familiar with hip-hop fashion, the restraint that’s used in this clutch and Margiela’s line in general is probably surprising when you consider that it’s been added to the zeitgeist of hip-hop culture. But it’s not surprising that Jay-Z was the one to do it – he long ago transitioned from being a kid from Brooklyn’s Marcie projects to a businessman with considerable industry clout that also happens to rap on the side, when he gets bored. So the restrained, clean lines of this clutch and Margiela’s vision fit in better with his reputation than any other rapper that I can imagine, perhaps besides fashion-addict Kanye West. Although I’m not sure that Kanye’s taste level, as they would say on Project Runway, is quite developed enough to be treading in this territory. Buy through Saks for $845.

I know that Valextra is much-lauded as a brand of staid and classic bags that are extremely well-made out of the finest leathers, but…I just don’t get it. I can’t wrap my head around it.

It seems like I’ve seen the Valextra Babila Top Handle everywhere – on celebrities, as one of Barneys.com’s much-lauded “obsessions,” at the finest stores. But I can’t help but find them unbearably plain and dull – the emperor appears to have no clothes.

I’ve been critical of Karan’s bags in the past – many of them seem to be overpriced and under designed. This one seems to have both a reasonable design standpoint and price, but I’m still unconvinced – even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

The asymmetrical placement of the pockets and zippers reminds me in no small amount of the Alexander McQueen Faithful Tote that we took note of back in July. The concept seems to be almost exactly the same in the two bags – a tough, black leather tote made out of a seemingly-random-but-not mishmash of hardware and pockets. So when two bags have such similar goals, I guess the only thing left to do is decide which one is more successful.

I appreciate that Karan used matte instead of glossy leather on this bag. It goes with the industrial/biker feel much better than the glossy alternative, and just tends to look softer and richer in general. So, plus one for her. I don’t like how the handles are set, though, and that may be the chief thing that’s holding me back from really embracing this bag. They seem too wide and thick for their height, and they ruin the proportion of the bag. If it hadn’t been for them, Karan might have finally shown signs of getting the gist of this whole handbag thing. Buy through Saks for $1295.
